My Current Morning Routine
Morning routines are so important. They are almost ritualistic in nature to most people, being unable to proceed with the rest of their day without having completed it. It also says a lot about a person, the way they treat and/or value mornings. Some people wake up at 6am (like my dad) when the rest of the world is asleep. They relish in the peace and quiet of the morning, having their own space and time to complete their morning routine. On the other hand, some people (namely me) appreciate any sleep they can get, and prefer to take more time to show their pillow some love in the morning.
Don’t get me wrong, I can do an early morning. However, if I have the option, I like a nice 8:30-9am wake-up time. Recently, that is when my day starts. I’ll open the blinds to get some light in, and then hang out in my bed for a bit longer because it’s just so comfortable. This is especially true because I’ve been trying to keep the room cooler at night to help me sleep, à la advice from Shawn Stevenson. I’m also doing my very best to not reach for my phone right when I wake up. Less turning off my alarm, the phone must stay out of my hand for at least the first hour I’m awake.
In that first hour, I like to brush my teeth right away. Something about walking around with a bacteria-ridden mouth for the entire morning is just unpleasant to me (just like the words bacteria-ridden.. oops). Doing this helps me to feel fresh, and then I won’t be drinking all that bacteria when I have my morning coffee. For the last month or so, I’ve been replacing regular milk for coconut milk in my coffee. I love a coconut milk latte with Lavazza espresso from Coppaccino Cafe.
Depending on how much work I have to do for the day, or if I’m attending any events, I’ll wash my face once I’ve got my coffee. This one is non-negotiable. By now, it’s impossible for anyone reading the blog to miss the fact that I love skincare. This step in my routine happens day and night, whether or not I’m coming home in the middle of the night from a bar, or if I have barely slept the night before and have a flight to catch or a commitment to stick to. Nothing comes in the way of my skincare. If I need some extra help, I’ll use these cute gold under-eye masks to help refresh my eyes and look more awake.
I’ll usually listen to a podcast or watch a funny Youtube video while performing my skincare ritual because I am a serial multi-tasker. Doing so means I start the day off by either laughing or learning something, which is important to me (especially on days where I wake up feeling off). As a blogger, it’s also important for me to engage with other content creators, so I spend about an hour commenting and liking other people’s posts. Tuesdays and Thursdays are non-negotiable gym days. At 10am on days that start with “T”, I head to the gym to meet my personal trainer friend whom I work out with regularly (S/O to Rakel ❤). She’s helped me learn better form and keeps me motivated because #morningsarehard.
How do you spend your mornings? I love hearing about people’s morning routines. Some of my faves are outlined here. What are your non-negotiables? Tell me about your routines in the comments!
